Common CMS Shortcomings
It is amazing how many web design companies use third-party Content Management System software or off-the-shelf packages as they are sometimes known. At Lime Thinking we write our own code, and we know how it works.
Starting a project with someone else's unknown code is like building without foundations. The site will always be limited by the capabilities of the underlying software and the following issues will inevitably come up:
Appearance
The site will never look like you want it to. An off-the-shelf CMS will fundamentally limit the way in which it can be laid out.
Also, it's very common for some CMS products to give users free reign over the entry of text and colours. This can lead to some real outbursts of creativity leading to such user generated content as this.

Functionality
Adding new features that your business needs but are not supported by the CMS will be a real stumbling block.
Shelf Life
Off-the-shelf products have a shelf life and will quickly date if not constantly maintained, usually by an expert on that particular product.
Security
As off-the-shelf systems sell in high volumes they are a prime target for exploitation by hackers. As soon as an exploit or security breach is discovered, hackers use it to infiltrate any website using that CMS. As such, it is in a hacker's best interest to try to find one exploit which can be used many times, making off-the-shelf packages a tempting target.
